Media Guidelines

The Marketing and Communications Office is here to support your efforts.

Patient care is our first priority at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. As such, patient safety and confidentiality are our highest responsibility.

  • St. Vincent’s does not provide condition reports on victims of violent crime.

  • All patient interviews, filming, and photography must be coordinated through and approved by the Marketing and Communications Office. Patients must provide written permission to St. Vincent’s to participate in any of these activities.

  • It is our policy that working reporters, photographers, and camera crews must be escorted when visiting at any of St. Vincent’s sites of care. This policy protects our patients’ privacy and authorizes your presence.

Patient Conditions

St. Vincent’s adheres to the American Hospital Association (AHA) guidelines specific to patient privacy and conditions, as specified by the Health Insurance and Portability Act (HIPPA).

  • St. Vincent’s does not provide condition reports on victims of violent crime.

  • If a patient has asked to remain confidential, we cannot confirm that we have a patient by that name.

  • Condition report calls will not be answered between 11:00 pm and 8:30 am.

Under HIPPA, healthcare providers may only disclose patient information with the patient’s permission, and only if a reporter asks about a specific individual by name. If these requirements are met, a one-word status report may be given. The official AHA one-word patient conditions and definitions follow:

  • Undetermined: Patient is awaiting physician and/or assessment.

  • Treated and Released (patient was treated and has been discharged).

  • Good. Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious and comfortable. Indicators are excellent.

  • Fair. Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious, but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are questionable.

  • Serious. Vital signs may be unstable and not within normal limits. Patient is acutely ill. Indicators are questionable.

  • Critical. Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable.

According to the AHA, “stable” should not be used as a condition nor should it be combined with the conditions listed above, which by definition, often indicate a patient is unstable.

Under the HIPPA privacy rules, there may be times when we are unable to provide a condition or confirm that a specific individual is a patient. (Ex. Someone who has opted out of our patient information registry; who is using an assumed name for privacy; who is a victim of abuse, or a behavioral health patient.) In these circumstances, our response will be: We do not have a patient listed by that name.

Death of a patient

According to the AHA, it is permissible to disclose that a patient is deceased as a general condition. Hospitals may not share information with the media on the specifics about sudden, violent, or accidental deaths, or deaths from natural causes without the permission of the decedent’s next-of-kin or other legal representative. Hospitals may not disclose information regarding the date, time, or cause of death.
