St. Vincent’s nursing staff delivers outstanding care

 Magnet® Recognition: In November 2012, St. Vincent’s Medical Center achieved the Magnet® recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The ANCC’s Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes healthcare organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing services and is the gold standard for nursing practice. 

  • St. Vincent’s Medical Center is the only hospital in Fairfield County, awarded to only three hospitals in Connecticut. Only 395 out of 6,000 U.S. healthcare organizations receive this honor.

  • The Magnet® Recognition Program focuses on advancing three goals: promoting quality of care, identifying excellence in the delivery of nursing services to patients, and disseminating nursing care best practices.. Click here for more on St. Vincent’s Magnet Recognition award.


Nursing Certification

Nursing certification validates that nurses have met stringent requirements for knowledge and experience and are qualified to provide competent specialty care. 

St. Vincent’s encourages all nurses who provide care to become certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

  • Certification programs are rigorous and meet nationally recognized standards. 

  • ANCC certification is a sound and legally defensible measurement of nursing knowledge. 

  • The certification programs are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS).  

  • These independent accrediting bodies have established nationally acknowledged standards and criteria for the recognition of certification programs and use rigorous processes to determine whether programs meet their standards.

Nurse’s Week Excellence Awards

St. Vincent’s Shared Governance Professional Practice Council worked diligently in 2010 to establish professional recognition awards for registered nurses. Nurses are nominated by their peers and are recognized during the annual Nurse’s Week Recognition Award Ceremony May 6-12.

Magnet® Recognition: St. Vincent's Medical Center

St. Vincent’s Medical Center embarked on its journey toward Magnet® Designation in September 2010. In February 2012, our team submitted our Magnet® Document to the ANCC for consideration and achieved Magnet® recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in November of 2012.

In 1993, through the research base established in the 1980’s, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA), established a formal program to acknowledge excellence in nursing services: the Magnet Recognition Program®.

This program is now considered the “gold standard” for nursing excellence and quality patient care in healthcare organizations nationally and internationally. Only a small percentage of organizations in the U.S. and internationally meet the 88 Sources of Evidence, or standards, for nursing excellence.

In 2008, the ANCC Commission introduced a new vision, and a new conceptual model that grouped the 14 Forces of Magnetism, listed below, into 6 key components:
