Radiation Oncology

At St. Vincent’s Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care, we provide you and your loved ones with advanced radiation oncology services.

Our collaborative, multidisciplinary team of radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists, nurses and therapists work together to determine which combination of treatments will bring about the best outcome for your individual diagnosis. At weekly Tumor Board conferences we conduct at the hospital, we share information and ideas. Our team approach enables us to monitor and evaluate your condition and chart your progress all while providing you and your loved ones with collaborative medical care and emotional support.

Our Radiation Oncology Team

  • Radiation Oncologists: Radiation oncologists are physicians who oversee your radiation therapy treatments. Board certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR), [outside link] they work with the other members of the radiation therapy team to develop your treatment plan and ensure that each treatment is prescribed accurately.
  • Medical Physicists: Medical physicists provide technical assistance to physicians, dosimetrists and therapists for the implementation and accuracy of radiation therapy. Our medical physicists are also board certified by the ABR.
  • Dosimetrists: Medical dosimetrists work with highly sophisticated computers to create radiation treatment plans based on the radiation oncologist's prescription orders. Their objective is to minimize radiation to normal organs and maximize it to the tumor. Our dosimetrists are board-certified by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board.
  • Radiation Therapists: Radiation therapists work with radiation oncologists to administer radiation treatment under the radiation oncologist's prescription and supervision. Radiation therapists also perform CT scans for radiation therapy planning and build shielding devices. Our radiation therapists are board-certified by the ABR and licensed by the State of Connecticut.
  • Radiation Oncology Nurse: Our radiation oncology nurses are known for their compassionate, highly personalized care. They oversee and coordinate all phases of your radiation therapy, including an assessment during treatment.
  • Administrative Assistance: Our clerical staff members are there for you throughout all phases of your radiation treatments. They help with the consultations, medical records, appointments and specific insurance needs.

State-of-the-Art Technologies

At St. Vincent’s Radiation Oncology Center, you or your loved ones will benefit from the most advanced, breakthrough technologies. These include:

  • Novalis TX ™/Exac-trac™: Using robotic technology to adjust tumor changes in six dimensions, this highly advanced stereotactic radiosurgery approach offers fast, accurate, non-surgical treatments for the brain, head, neck and body.
  • GE PET/CT Scanner: This very specialized device pinpoints the best approach to treatment and the best way to monitor your progress. Also, motion range can be predicted more accurately during treatment and planning, achieving a better treatment result.
  • IMRT/IGRT: These two treatments, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT), are used to maximize radiation dose to a tumor and minimize the dose to the normal surrounding tissues.
  • Breast Cancer Treatment: We are highly experienced in partial breast brachytherapy, prone breast technique and hypo fractionated (Canadian regimen) protocols.
  • GE LightSpeed Large Bore CT Scanner/Simulator: Latest CT technology utilized to plan or “map” the radiation plan.
  • Nucletron HDR Brachytherapy Unit: Used for focused high-dose gynecological, breast (mammosite), lung and head/neck treatments.
  • SBRT: Non-Invasive Option for Early Stage Lung Cancer St. Vincent’s now offers a newly-developed non-invasive option for early stage lung cancer: stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). Radiosurgery refers to the precise delivery of high doses of radiation therapy to small regions with pinpoint accuracy. This technology is similar to the one developed for the treatment of brain tumors, which has been in use for decades.
