Heart & Vascular Treatments and Procedures

At St. Vincent’s Regional Heart and Vascular Center, you and your heart are in the good hands of our compassionate cardiac care team.

We provide you with a full range of cardiac treatment options and surgical procedures. We treat you as a whole person; mind, body and spirit. We assess your condition by conducting a thorough, accurate diagnosis in our state-of-the-art cardiac testing facilities. We design individual treatment options, including: non-invasive surgery, lifestyle changes, medication, cardiac interventions, and open-heart surgery. At St. Vincent’s, we care for you and your heart from diagnosis to treatment, from rehabilitation to recovery.

Mitral Valve Repair

The repair rate for patients at the Heart & Vascular Institute with leaking mitral valves is close to 100 percent. Our experience is an important part of that success. More than 40 years of research has determined that, for most complex procedures, the hospitals and surgeons who perform them most often have the best patient outcomes. Specifically, a study of mitral valve replacement published in May 2017 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found much higher survival rates – and a greater likelihood of valve repair than replacement – when the surgeon had performed the procedure at least 25 times each year.

Open Heart/CABG

St. Vincent’s cardiac surgeons perform Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) procedures to restore blood flow to you or your loved one’s heart. The procedure involves using blood vessels taken from another part of your body to crate a new route for the blood to flow around obstructed arteries. Our cardiothoracic surgery team includes nurses, respiratory specialists, case managers, and rehabilitation staff who specialize in the care of our cardiac surgery patients.

St. Vincent’s Medical Center is proud to be the first hospital in the region to offer Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) surgery as an alternative for our cardiac patients who suffer from aortic stenosis. Our cardiac care team is one of the most experienced with performing this safe, minimally invasive procedure.

St. Vincent's was the first hospital in Fairfield County to introduce Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVR) with the MitraClip® device, a life-saving procedure to repair a diseased mitral valve without open heart surgery.

AFib (Atrial Fibrillation) Treatments

St. Vincent’s is a national leader in the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib). We are the only hospital in the tri-state area to offer the full spectrum of AFib treatments in one location, from minimally invasive non-surgical treatments to our pioneering work in advanced convergent and hybrid ablation techniques.

We are now among the first hospitals in Connecticut to offer patients with non-valvular AFib an alternative to long-term warfarin medication with the newly approved Watchman Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) Implant.
