At St. Vincent’s, our midwives focus on a holistic approach to providing care and support during your pregnancy, labor, and birth.

At The Birthplace at St. Vincent’s Medical Center offers natural, minimal intervention delivery by midwives, to appropriate patients, with the added advantage and safety net of the Medical Center environment and protocol.

The Birthplace at St. Vincent’s

St. Vincent’s Medical Center’s Birthplace includes two private birth suites where mothers can labor and deliver under the guidance of a midwife. The Birthplace at St. Vincent’s is the only in-hospital “birthing center” in Fairfield County.

The beautiful birth suites resemble bedrooms with a warm décor and comfortable furniture, tubs for pain management, plush bed linens and privacy screen. Other amenities include a common area and kitchen where mom or relatives can cook for the family.

The Midwife Experience

The growing popularity of the midwife experience is due to the continuous physical and emotional support offered by the midwife for women during labor, and inclusion of the needs of the family in the birth.

Midwifery does not replace the traditional hospital birth. Rather, it provides an alternative for those who seek it. Midwifery birth centers follow different protocols from traditional maternity care. Candidates for midwife delivery must be low-risk pregnancies.

The midwife remains with the patient, evaluating maternal and fetal status, the progression of the delivery, and also provides immediate care for the newborn. The midwife works with the patient throughout her pregnancy, educating and instilling confidence in the naturalness of the childbirth process.

A Midwife Delivery

A midwife delivery focuses on personalized, constant one-on-one-care from a holistic perspective, starting with prenatal education though to labor. This includes massage, whirlpool and other relaxation techniques, and a delivery with minimal intervention. Siblings are welcome during the birth. The mother’s wishes are always respected.

Patients leave The Birthplace a maximum of 12 hours after birth. The midwife is certified to perform well-baby assessment to be followed up with a home visit to help the mother adjust to the home environment and assists with nutritional information and breastfeeding techniques.
