Dr. Glenda Callender is one of two fellowship-trained endocrine surgeons with the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute, working at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport.

Coming to Hartford HealthCare from Trinity Health of New England, Dr. Callender is a high-volume endocrine surgeon with more than 10 years’ experience.

Dr. Callender’s clinical areas of interest include: all types of thyroid surgery, particularly for advanced or recurrent thyroid cancers; parathyroid surgery including minimally-invasive parathyroidectomy and reoperative parathyroidectomy; and adrenal surgery for benign nodules or adrenal cancers, including posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy.

She has also been very active in the field of academic surgery, previously serving as associate professor in the Department of Surgery at Yale University, where she was the director of endocrine surgical oncology clinical trials for six years. She is a widely-published and sought-after speaker in her field, and has participated in a variety of clinical research trials.

She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She completed internship and residency in general surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she served as administrative chief resident in her final year. She also completed fellowships in endocrine surgery and surgical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, earning a clinical excellence award and mid-level providers’ appreciation award.

Dr. Callender’s research has included new treatments for thyroid cancer, endocrine surgical oncology outcomes and genetic studies of endocrine tumors.

She is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, International Association of Endocrine Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, and New England Surgical Society. She has served as a reviewer for articles submitted to a variety of professional journals, including World Journal of Surgery, Surgery, Journal of the American College of Surgeons and Annals of Surgical Oncology.
