Q. Who Qualifies for Financial Assistance?
A. Financial assistance is available for patients with limited incomes who are uninsured or underinsured. Patients accrue a large balance due to co-pays, deductibles, coinsurance or services that are not covered. Our Financial Counselors can determine if you qualify for financial assistance or a payment plan. You may apply for a discount regardless of immigration status.

Q. What are the income limits?
A. The amount of discount varies based on your income and the size of your family. Our financial assistance policy has expanded the income limits beyond the Federal Poverty Limits (FPL) up to 400% of the FPL.

Q. What do I need to apply for a discount?
A. Patients will need to present acceptable identification information (license, passport, permanent resident card) and gross income, including wages, income taxes, alimony,
child support, rent, pension, Social Security, unemployment benefits, Workers Compensation and any other potential verifiable income.

Q. Can someone explain the discount and help me apply?
A. Yes, free, confidential help is available. The Financial Counselor can determine if you qualify for free or discounted programs, such as Charity Care, free bed funds and Medicaid. The Counselor will assist with the application process and proper documentation.

Q. What services are covered?
A. All medically necessary services provided by St. Vincent’s are covered by the discount, including outpatient services, emergency care and inpatient admissions. Charges from private doctors who provide services in the hospital may not be covered. You should talk to the private doctors about discounts or payment plans.

Q. How much do I have to pay?
A. Our Financial Counselor will give you the details about your specific discount(s) once your application is processed.

Q. How do I get the discount?
A. Patients must complete the application form. After receiving income verification, St. Vincent’s can process the application for a discount, according to your level of income. You can apply for a discount before you have an appointment, when you come to the hospital to get care, or when the bill comes in the mail.

Q. What if I'm rejected?
A. During the application process, patients will not be required to pay the hospital bill. If your application is denied, the hospital must submit the reasons to you in writing and must provide an avenue for appeal of this decision to a higher level within the hospital.

Q. What if I do not meet the income limits?
A. If you cannot pay your bill and are not eligible for discounts, St. Vincent’s offers an interest-free payment plan to those that meet the income limits. The amount you pay depends on your income.

  • At a minimum, any patient who does not have health insurance is eligible for an uninsured discount on non-elective medical services provided by the hospital.
  • We accept cash when paid in person, checks and major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover.
  • If you are having difficulty paying your bill, please contact our Customer Service Department at 203.576.5384.
  • Patients who cannot afford to pay their full balance may enroll in a short-term, interest-free monthly payment plan.
  • If you do not alert us, we may refer your account to an outside bill collection service. Let us work with you to avoid being sent to collections.
